Community Description

Seventeen miles from Downtown Chicago, Des Plaines, Illinois, is located in the heart of the northwest suburbs. Originally started in the 1850's by land speculators who built a railroad from Chicago to Janesville, Wisconsin, the towns first subdivision plat was recorded by Socrates Rand. When the railroad was purchased by the Chicago and Northwestern (C&NW) in 1859, it named the station Des Plaines. In 1869 the name of the subdivision was changed to match the station. Within minutes of major transportation centers like O'Hare International Airport, Metra commuter trains, and Interstate 90 & 294, the city is home to several Fortune 500 companies as well as many industrial, commercial, retail and service businesses giving residents low property taxes with a wide variety of city services. The city boasts an award winning school district, a full service park district with two golf courses, driving range, and water park. The city recently completed construction of a new library with retail space and has several new downtown redevelopment projects under construction or in the planning stages.
