Originally started in the 1850's by land speculators who built a railroad from Chicago to Janesville, Wisconsin, the towns first subdivision plat was recorded by Socrates Rand. When the railroad was purchased by the Chicago and Northwestern (C&NW) in 1859, it named the station Des Plaines. In 1869 the name of the subdivision was changed to match the station.
